Depending on how many gift cards are in your program, the sync can take a while to complete. You’ll see the progress of the sync in the dashboard. Once the sync is completed, all existing gift cards in your program will be redeemable in your Shopify’s checkout as discount codes. New gift cards will be automatically synced to your Shopify store as well.
Using a Gift Card in Shopify’s Checkout
1) Get card code of gift card
A gift card recipient can redeem their gift card by using their card code in Shopify’s checkout page. They can copy the card code from their gift card’s detail page online or type in the card code from the back of their physical card.
The card number must not contain any dashes but only contain the characters of the card code.
2) Enter card code in Shopify’s checkout page and click “Apply”
The card code will apply a discount to the order for either the total value of the current balance of the gift card or enough to cover the order subtotal if the gift card’s balance is greater than the order subtotal. The gift card balance will only be applied towards the subtotal of the order and not to the shipping total.
Once the order is placed with the gift card discount code applied, the balance of the gift card is updated to reflect the use of the card in the Shopify checkout.
Refunding a Shopify order with a gift card discount applied
When a Shopify order that has a gift card discount applied is refunded or cancelled, the gift card’s balance is refunded proportional to the items refunded of the order, or a full refund is done when the order is cancelled.
1) Refunding items from the order
When refunding items from an order, the amount refunded to the gift card will be equal to the discount amount applied to the item by the gift card discount. In the example below, 10 items are refunded out of the 20 items in the order. The original discount amount was $14 for all 20 items, so only $7 of the total discount amount is applicable to the 10 items being refunded. $7 will be refunded to the gift card.
2) Cancelling an order
When an order is cancelled, the full gift card discount amount will be refunded to the gift card. If the order was previously partially refunded by line item, the remaining items will be refunded and the applicable discount amount to those remaining line items will be refunded to the gift card.
3) Refunding shipping or a partial amount
Shopify allows you to refund the shipping cost and also refunded an amount that was charged to the payment source for the order. When using either of these refund options, no refund will be issued to the applied gift card.
